Hayling Island is a proper island surrounded by water. To the north of the island, an iron-age shrine was made into a Roman Temple in the first century BC. Hayling Island was used by the military during 1944 as a mock invasion site for D-Day. Today, it is a very popular surfing and wind-surfing spot and is where wind-surfing was invented.
