A little background on Hayling Island:

To the north of the island, an iron-age shrine was made into a Roman Temple in the first century BC. The oldest church on the island - St Peter's - was built by monks from Normandy in 1140. In the churchyard is the oldest yew tree in England, estimated between one and two thousand years old. Hayling Island was used by the military during 1944 as a mock invasion site for D-Day. Today, it is a very popular surfing and wind-surfing spot and is where wind-surfing was invented.
